Discernment (a.k.a. God Glasses)
Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did. 1 John 2:6 (NLT)
I’ll never forget something my friend, Tricia, said one summer when we served together at church camp.
“You either see the world filtered through God glasses or the culture’s glasses.”
The idea struck me. I’d never considered our worldview in this manner, but the description gave me new insight regarding spiritual blindness. Without God glasses, we are blind.
The Bible frames our worldview as Christians. Not only does this help us live out God’s purposes, but a biblical worldview helps us make sense of what doesn’t make sense.
Rick Warren writes in his August 28th devotion, Live Like Jesus: With Discernment, “To live like Jesus means to live with discernment. Being discerning means you check things out. When you encounter a new idea, you ask questions like, ‘Is this the truth? Is it God’s worldview, or is it just a passing fad?’”
Romans 12:2, reminds us not to copy the behavior of the world. John 7:24 in the Message says, “. . . Use your head—and heart!—to discern what is right, to test what is authentically right.”
As Pastor Rick continues, “Jesus is telling his followers not to be cynics and skeptics—not to be the kind of people who focus on the worst. But at the same time Jesus wants his followers to use their heads—to think through things instead of being naïve.”
At T.R.A.C. and T.R.A.C.life, putting on God glasses is critical. As we face challenging situations or difficult people, we always want to filter everything through God’s word. Only then can we truly practice discernment like Jesus.
Prayer: Lord, open our eyes to see what you see. Send heavenly help and divine wisdom in every situation we face. Give us your supernatural peace and help us trust in you more each day. In Jesus’ powerful name we pray. Amen.
