September 4
Traction
Psalm 17:5

My steps have stayed on your path; 
I have not wavered from following you. 

Have you ever worn cleats for football, soccer or track? Name three benefits cleats give you over regular sneakers:

Today’s scripture is about staying on the path God wants us to be on without wavering. Wavering means “weaving, slipping or falling off.” 

TRACTION comes to mind when I’ve worn cleats. Look up the definition of traction on your phone and write it below: 

In our quest to follow Christ, we need to strap on our spiritual cleats to stay on the path God wants for us, one of goodness, mercy and blessing. Here are some examples of things that will keep us firmly planted on the path: trusting God, running away from sin, memorizing God’s Word, confessing when we do sin and showing love to others. 

What are some specific things you can apply to your life to gain better spiritual traction? Write them inside the cleat picture and then take them to God; as Hebrews 12:1 says, He’ll give you the traction you need to run your race.

Broken Fences
John 16:33

I have told you all this so that you may have peace in Me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world. 

I was raised on a farm in southern Washington State, and we mended a lot of fences. Because we had horses or cattle that leaned on the fences, a post would break, and we’d have to round up stock and mend the fences.  

Today’s scripture are the words of Jesus to His disciples. He doesn’t promise we won’t have to mend fences; we won’t be free from trials and sorrows. But what He does promise is victory over our hardships and peace while we endure them. 

In the first sentence of today’s scripture, the “all this” Jesus already told His disciples is that He will soon die and they will soon be persecuted for believing in Jesus. Those feel like unbearable trials, but just like the disciples did, we can trust God because He has everything under control.  

In John 14:27, Jesus said He’s leaving a gift for all who follow Him—peace that will calm our minds and hearts. Have you ever felt this peace during a difficult situation? If so, describe it below. 

We will have trials and sorrows while we’re on earth, but when we have Jesus in our hearts, He is with us and gives us a peace the world can’t understand. AND He has overcome the world’s sin by dying on the cross.
